Projects under implementation at Maithri
As early as 1991, Maithri has been initiating networking among NGOs in doing good work for the society. Jointly with College NSS students, we collected relief materials for earthquake affected places in Uttarkashi (in the Himalayas). In 2000, Maithri joined hands with two other Chennai based NGOs to collect relief materials for the Andhra cyclone.
Now working with two (one rural based and one city based) other NGOs, Maithri is generating awareness in 'care taking' during child rearing and pregnancy times for women in rural areas, providing educational aids and class facilities in rural districts by adopting 6 balwadies and 4 primary schools, donating mobility aids and offering advocacy to specially-able persons.
The trust provides financial assistance for education to meritorious students from the economically weaker or broken households. Financial assistance comprises of school fees, books, notebooks, uniform & shoes till he or she completes school.
Though education is the main thrust area, we also conduct medical camps, perform free IOL surgeries, and provide medical assistance to the poor, infirm & the terminally ill patients. So far we have distributed 15 calipers, 10 wheel chairs, 20 hearing aids & 12 sewing machines.
During the Uttarkashi earthquake & Andhra pradesh cyclones, we sent our volunteers to the affected areas with all the relief materials. And whenever there is a natural calamity, we rushed relief materials to the site. During the Gujarat earthquake we sent relief materials though the Ramakrishna Mission.
