Maithri thanks STATE BANK OF INDIA for sponsoring the gifts and food. Food was served in traditional south Indian style by Geetha Hotel staff and Maithri thanks Mr. Gopal, proprietor of Geetha Hotel for readily providing the sumptuous meal at reduced rates. Maithri also thanks Mrs.Shobana Surujit of California and Mr. Ashwin of Ashwetha restaurant for providing evening snacks in packed/portable containers. The event was a huge success and students and participants left the arena with full satisfaction. Maithri, in anticipation, enrolled 23 students this month, from a steady flow of deserving students seeking financial support. This unprecedented inclusion even before the summer,is due to the growing pool of deserving students needing financial support. March 2010Maithri thanks Mr. G. Ravikumar of Hyderabad for donating school bags to students and these bags were distributed to most deserving students immediately. On 14th March, Maithri conducted a medical camp with Dr. Malathy Ramani, General Physician, in her own clinic. The camp was mainly targeted towards the girl students who were issued free health check-up and medicines with very good advice on their food and nutrition.

The 'Spoken English and Personality Development' classes that were initiated early this year grew in size and more than 30 students took part this month. February 2010On the 1st of Feb 2010, Maithri was invited by TRIAD SOFTWARE Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, to be the recipient of a donation of Rs.1,22,000 towards educational assistances for the academic year 2010-2011. TRIAD became aware of Maithri's work from their web-site (www.maithritrust.org) and after visiting Maithri's founder and evaluating Maithri, TRIAD made this benevolent gesture.

On Feb 13th, Maithri's Founder/Trustee Mr. Shreedhar was invited by ARUWEE (an organization catering towards home for destitute elders and deprived children) for their tenth anniversary program in Kamarajar Arangam, Chennai. Shreedhar was asked to give away Certificates for social work to students from various city colleges. Shreedhar was also requested to welcome the chief guest, cine-actor, Dhanush.

January 2010Maithri began the year of 2010 by greeting donors, members and students. Special thanks to Madam Principal, St. Marks School, Adyar, Chennai for her extraordinary gesture, donation of an excellent collection of story books in mint condition to Maithri. Maithri also thanks Mr. Subramanian for donating college text books to all our students from his book bank. He also gave away dictionaries, long notebooks and self and life-improvement books to our students. Maithri has extended a unique and useful facility for students to learn 'Spoken English' and 'Personality Development' courses by conducting weekly class (on Sundays) from 10th January. Maithri gratefully thanks Mrs S.Rajalakshmi who, not only teaches for free but also provides space for conducting these classes (see pictures below).

Maithri would like to conclude the January news with a memoriam. We were deeply shocked by the sudden demise of an ardent patron and a wonderful person; Sri. Solai Sreerangam. May his soul rest in peace. December 2009This month marks some very important events participated by Maithri. "HEALTHY AGING" an open Forum was conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industries (Health Panel, TN) where, the Keynote Lecture was delivered by Dr. Robert P. Friedland, MD, Department of Neurology, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Kentucky, USA. Maithri's Shreedhar and Reshma Sharma took part in this event. On 25th, Maithri hosted a meeting where the topics addressed were on Improvement in concentration on studies' for students and also, on How to cope up with the present day emotional and psychological demands in the daily life of the Students. These important topics were discussed by Mr. Naresh Gupta, Chief Election Commissioner, TamilNadu. Sangamitra Amuda, a spiritual activist from Sanmarga Foundation., talked on meditation and self analysis by writing every day's happy and sad experiences separately as a means for introspection and self-improvement. Students had active discussions with both the speakers. Snacks and tea were sponsored by donors. (pictures)

On 27th Maithri went to Kalanjiyum trust and took part in student session on HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY? Each student has been given an opportunity to express what each one wanted to be in the community and serve the society. Shreedhar spoke on various ways the students can contribute to the community and giving importance to their own family to start with some pictures of the students spoke in that meet and trustee and members of both the organization.

November 2009On November 7th, Maithri took part in the XI Citizens Run at the Marina beach, Chennai under the threatening dark clouds. We are very happy that Dr (Miss) Bhargavi, who is now looking after Maithri physiotherapy unit (from June 2009) got Gold Medal (for her excellent performance by standing first in south India) from H.H. Barnala, Governer of Tamilnadu. Addionally, Mrs. Kathiyayini Mani, who was with Maithri physiotherapy unit (November 2007 - March 2009) graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland.
October 2009Deepavalli, the festival of lights was celebrated by Maithri with 20 most needy children. They were provided with new dresses and fire-crackers. This was made possible with the support extended by Sri Kumaran Silks of Panagalpark and Mylapore, Chennai. Both the shops gave away free dresses to Maithri students (churidar sets and gowns for girls and shirts for the boys). A special thanks to Mrs Manju for introducing the benevolent Kumarans to Maithri.

In the month of October, Maithri participated in three major programs involving children. Maithri participated at Avvai Home where The Aseema Trust (a NGO) performed a music and dance programme with the students of Avvai Home, Chennai. The dance was choreographed by V.R.Devika (Aseema Trustee) and musical rendition by Bombay Jayshri.. Giants Group of Chennai Main (another NGO) conducted series of service oriented programmes. On 26th October, Maithri took part in their fund raising drama by Crazy Mohan in Vani Mahal, T. Nagar, Chennai. Giants Group of Chennai is the main provider of school uniforms to Maithri students since 2006. On 26th October, Maithri took part in the closing function of training workshop for transgenders in Chennai. The transgenders underwent karate training to improve their self-confidence and general health. The six-day training session, also included other kinds of physical strength exercises like yoga, meditation and a personality development session. Under the auspice, 'The Kara Gender Capsule', about 100 or more members of transgender community are being trained by Reshma Sharma, a qualified instructor. The training was jointly organized by Dojo Chakra and Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust with the assistance of the Tamilnadu Aids Control Society and the G7 Group of companies. Hon. M.P. September 2009This month 4 new engineering students became the recipients of Maithri's support. This was made possible because of some excellent support obtained from some very generous sponsors. On 28th September, Maithri invited Ms Reshma Sharma, a self defense (karate) and personality development teacher/counselor to have a dialogue with Maithri's college students. 19 students took part and enjoyed this one-to-one chat and counseling. The students yearn for such workshops where their views and voices are heard. Also, they cherished the guidance obtained regarding various aspects of life and preparing themselves for meeting the demands of the real world like the work environment, etc. The students look forward to such workshops as they feel these open forums will help them immensely to meet fresh challenges when they complete their scholastic aspirations. August 2009On the 16th of this month, Maithri conducted a free eye-camp in cooperation with Rajan Eye Clinic, T.Nagar. 46 students and their parents availed this opportunity and of which about 7 students were called in for a follow-up for spectacles. Maithri thanks Rajan Eye Care Hospital for their methodical screening tests. Our thanks to the excellent service rendered by the surgeon and optometrists. Every attending member was provided with packed lunch which was generously provided by Mr. Gopal of Geeta Cafe, T.Nagar. Ms Sowmya Simhan and Mr Srinivasan of Sukruthi Social Foundation participated actively in the camp. The following Saturday was spent in taking the children for follow-up visit to the doctor. July 2009In the month of July, Maithri sponsored 5 new deserving students in addition to the existing regular ones. On 30th July, Maithri team went to the village Kalpattu (90 Kms from Chennai) to provide educational expenses for the poor students for the academic year 2009-10. The students from various schools attended the program and received the checks from the Founder Trustee, Mr. R.Shreedhar. Many of the students are orphans. June 2009On June 1st, a team of 4 board members from Mariona Sauquet Foundation, Barcelona, Spain visited with Mr. Ranvir Shaw, owner of Chennai based Apparel Company visited Maithri. The team met with the students, exchanged views and queried about their future study plans. They gave a gift packet to young Bharathy who is in her 4th grade and Subhashini who is undergoing her BE 3rd year in Textile/Apparel technology. They were very impressed with the girl's eloquence, emotional and passionate talk about her studies that Mr. Ranvir Shaw asked Ms. Subhashini to come in for a project in his company for a week (before her college re-opens) and promised that his company staff bus will pick her up. After observing her dedication and hard work for a week, they were very happy and offered her a job for the next summer.

Our student flow continues on Saturdays and 4 new students were inducted with good sponsorship. Aishwarya M.'s (9th grade) father died recently and her was mother was forced to take up a cooking job. Maithri came to her rescue with the help of a generous sponsor paying her entire year fees of nearly Rs.11,000. She shows good interest in Bharthanatyam and encouraged by Maithri and her sponsor. May 2009The students studying under our aegis excelled in the recently held board exam results. 6 girls and 5 boys topped in their school. All the students (100%) of the students sponsored by Maithri have graduated to the next class for the year 2009-2010. Two students have successfully completed their engineering degree and graduated with excellent prospects from campus interviews. Due to the prevailing economic recession period, they will have to wait for a few months to get the exact date of joining. Saturdays are filled with students filling the application for the new academic year and providing their mark-sheets and Thank you letters to Maithri and sponsors for the timely assistance. This month, 31 students received monetary assistance for educational fees, books, notebooks, uniforms and shoes and another 100 (regular) plus 19 (new) are currently awaiting the review by Maithri. Maithri thanks HCI, Canada for their prompt sponsorship - 44 students this academic year and various individual donors for their continued patronage. Maithri jointly conducted a one-month computer basic training course/workshop for 6 children and a mother of Maithri sponsored child. On 26th May, they were given certificates and small gifts for their successful completion. April 2009In the early part of this month, the students were very much involved in their studies preparing for their final exams. Since the second week of this month, Saturdays are flooded with old students getting new application forms for financial assistance for the next academic year. We have received more than 30 applications and of which, 16 students were provided with this year's fee and other study materials. Number of new students applications are coming in for review. The number of new applicants are more than previous years. The new applications are being reviewed and as per our policy and norms, very deserving students will be given priority and will be awarded assistance in June/July of this year.after our regular candidates. March 2009Early this month, Maithri entered into a joint venture with another NGO and inaugurated training programs for the specially-abled children. Maithri students were taken to MGM theme park, where the children played various games, enjoyed boating, giant wheels, roller coasters, etc. The entry ticket of Rs 300 per person was sponsored by a donor for 23 children. The children enjoyed this break before the days of preparing for exams began. Two students were inducted to our student list for 2008-09 academic year. Both are in the professional degree stream. These deserving candidates have been performing well and scoring very good grades. HandiCare International Canada, has agreed to sponsor 50% of the study cost for the rest of the year. February 2009Mrs. Sulochana Krishnamurthy of Handicare International Canada visited Maithri and interacted with students. The programme started off with a Flute recital by Harahara Subramanian, an engineering student. Students received souvenir from Maithri/HCI and parents and students were served packaged snacks. Maithri co-sponsored the distribution of Papparamittai, a collection of stories narrated musically for kids. The program was held in the Russian Cultural Centre near Hotel Chola, Chennai. January 2009The year began with students joining to hold Prayers for World Peace and Communal Unity in Maithri office. Later Pongal gifts were distributed and a former student, Santosh Mahadevan who got a job in Mumbai narrated briefly about the help and guidance he received from Maithri when he was in Coimbatore College hostel pursuing Engineering and German language courses. He has already started a donation of Rs.1000/month to Maithri and Maithri appreciates the gesture and wishes him Good Luck in all his endeavors. December 2008World Disability Day was celebrated by Maithri on the 6th along with another NGO, in Meenakshi College Auditorium, Chennai. The programme was well attended and 3 tri-cycles were handed over on behalf of Maithri to deserving persons residing in the rural areas of Madhuranthagam District. Ankle support (Rs. 20,000/-) was provided to a school going child from Chennai; Thanks to Lister Foundation, Mylapore. Christmas marked with distribution of clothing to deserving students of Maithri. Maithri thanks a donor from USA for a new laptop for our educational (community) group. November 2008Maithri had a wonderful and interesting visitor, Mr. Raghunath from the Kanchi Kamakoti Foundation Inc., New York, USA. He made efforts to understand our projects and network of rural educational programs by visiting places around Chennai. He also distributed the educational help provided by Maithri to the children who are under the care of charity homes in villages. We gained useful information from his visit and expertise. October 2008Deepavali was celebrated by Maithri with senior citizens and children on 19th October by distributing dresses, sweets and food. Thanks to Mr. Prabhu Srinivasan who had sponsored this in memory of his father Mr. Srinivasan. Maithri provided dress materials (with stitching charges) plus soaps, shampoo, dhal packet, snacks and sweets to 7 needy children. These deserving students want to remember this festival fondly for its fun and joyous celebrations and this was made possible by the volunteers of Maithri. Bringing joy and happiness in the life of these children by means of such get-to-gethers, will ensure that they do not feel isolated from society. As their childhood will never come back in their life, it is important that these days are filled with fond memories. Children responded happily and hope that this would be an annual event. Maithri would like to make this an annual event. Maithri requests and seeks sponsors for this annual important event that brings bountiful joy to the children. August 200861st Indian Independence Day was celebrated by donating a sewing machine to a destitute woman in Pallikarannai (near Velacherry). Plates and tumblers were given to an orphanage near the city of Chennai. The number of students getting help from us has gone up to 127 (20th Aug,2008). . Another 10 students are currently on the waiting list and WE SEEK SPONSORSHIP FROM DONORS. July 2008We are happy that so far 112 students have received educational fees, books, notebooks, writing instruments, uniforms and shoes. Of which 8 students are pursuing graduate courses and 3 are pursuing engineering courses. UMA MAHESHWARI , RAMAKRISHNAN, VIDHYA, ARCHANA DEVI and SUBHASHINI all moved to higher, better levels . Maithri distributed notebooks and childrens' items to 39 school-children in a rural school which had encouraged in stopping frequent drop outs. We along with another NGO are researching into the basic reasons for the drop outs and find means and ways to bring them back to school and keep them interested in school. April 2007Students were very much involved in their studies as ensuing exams hold the key for the future. Saturdays are filled with old students getting new application forms by giving their yellow identity card. We have received 30 new applications for scrutiny and as per our policy norms very deserving students are given priority. Physiotherapy wing has been doing very well. People who cannot afford are treated with extra care. Our therapist have been giving outdoor visits to an old woman of 90 years, She was almost bedridden but she feels better and cheerful after the treatment. January 2007(26/1/07 Republic Day) MAITHRI had a good awareness cum demo on physiotherapy in the infosyes hall attached to Sri Ramakrishna High School (north branch). 30 teachers attended and had all their doubts on therapy and pain - associated with long hours of sitting and standing positions, cleared. Many of the teachers wanted to get treatment and we offered them the option of any day visit to the center as per their convenience. Sri Swamiji presided and the Principal, Mrs Leela Parthasarathy took part. All Saturdays of this month have been filled with our children receiving fees for the last term of 2006-07 academic year. We disbursed more than Rs 20000/-(Rupees Twenty thousand only). December 2006On December 5th, we celebrated The World Disabled Day with Freedom Trust , iflexpearls in Kodambakkam High Road (near hotel Palmgroove). Students from Little Flower Convent, T.Nagar and St. Louis school for the hearingly impaired, Adyar.took part in a musical evening. Maithri honored Dr. Sunder for his excellent contribution to the rehabilitation and encouraging talented specially abled in music and arts. November 2006Founder Trustee Shreedhar.R had his 61st birthday celebration on first and fourth of November. Many donors participated and greeted him. Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust decided to start a corpus fund for educating special children in the coming years. Our discussions are still going on regarding the setting-up of a library of CDs for the visually impaired, to help in studying professional qualifying examinations, for getting jobs in their selected field. On Children's day, November 14th, Maithri Educational And Charitable Trust founder joined with visually impaired persons from the noted city schools and conducted a grand programme which was broadcasted on FM radio Mirchi. Educational fees are being paid to all 17 students who received marks and who acquired and assured best results. On 25th November, we took part in the World Disabled Day celebration conducted by Sukrithi Social Foundation in Meenakshi College, Kodmbakkam. Many aids and appliances were donated to the needy. Physio-therapy unit is doing well with two home visits per day by the therapist and all patients are showing good response. We have added a new machine. October 2006On Gandhi Jayanthi day, we participated in a-1 day workshop on traffic rules conducted by NSS volunteers of an Engineering college, Moggapier and Sukrithi Social Foundation joined us to emphasise the prevention of disability by following Road Safety Rules. Deepavali was celebrated with children from various city homes and orphanages by distributing sweets and new dresses. Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust donated 25 sarees and dhotis donated by one of our regular donors and sweets were donated by another regular donor. These donors are long standing patrons of the Trust. Had discussion on reviving audio cassette library for the visually impaired. Discussions about modern appliances and applications with software developing (private) company have already shaped up well. Here, we'd like to stress the need for a place and sponsor for the same for a long term basis. September 2006Shreedhar, along with a volunteer were invited by Mehta Welfare Association, Singapore. Mr. Tiang Hwee, Deputy Executive Director discussed the training rendered to the differently abled, artistic children by learning musical instruments of various countries. This acted as the main part of the therapy in a typical curriculum system. Maithri Educational And Charitable Trust has been treated as one such organization. It was a wonderful experience to be in a school built by Buddhist Monks and watching their daily activities. Shreedhar was the Chief Guest for the organisation's fund raiser function of Indian Carnatic Music concert; held in Singapore where interesting renditions were given by various talented artists. August 2006Independence Day was celebrated with the inmates of the old age home in Tambaram. We also spent a few hours with the inmates of Uthavum Ullangal. First half of the month went with our regular services and in the second half the trustee Shreedhar, went to Bangalore to attend wedding of the organizational head from Canada (her son). Had a good time in meeting the local NGOs and exchanged views on the future advancement in technology and its usage for the differently abled people. Two Reliance telephone connections were donated to a visually impaired women in T.Nagar as a means of expansion to her existing PCO (costing Rs 3000/- ). July 2006Physio therapy center, an organ of Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust started giving treatment to needy persons in their homes, and also for normal to special therapy needs. Special arrangement was made to treat women who are admitted into the special care unit and who were suffering cruelty done in their own home, for burns and muscle contractions. Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust took part in the function where the Governor of Tamil Nadu awarded 'Sanjeevini' to the medical professional who are doing yeomen service in the society. Maithri Educational and Charitable Trust was called upon to explain some of the services done beyond regular commitments namely, in disaster relief, joining with other social organizations without competing attitude by the GIANTS. This was explained in the special meeting in Panigraha Kalyana Mandapam, Chennai-33. June 2006Marc Sauquet Foundation Barcelona, Spain visited and reviewed their educational sponsorship in the last year. After immense satisfaction, the Foundation went on to accept more children for the current year. Thanks to the Trustees of the MSF and Mr. Ranveer Shah for the encouragement. GIANTS Chennai - on the occasion of their inaugural programme; we sponsored uniform for 5 childrens and sponsored 2 annual educational expenses. Children were invited and given these directly in this award function. More new applicants are in line for getting educational aid towards this months end. May 2006Crowded Saturdays, almost all of our regular children come, 70 in total, to renew their applications with passed certificates and mark sheets. Some of the sponsors for the education interacted with the children. This year we have seen many having good participation in out-door games and sports and acquiring distinguished medals. Maithri Educational And Charitable Trust took part in launching SOFT,(Servant of Freedom Trust) to render service for talent promotion and physio- therapy for the I.T. people who develop occupational hazards that leads to neck and elbow pain. April 2006New academic year and Maithri Educational And Charitable Trust started receiving applications. 50 applicants were already issued after assessing the marks scored in the last year of 2005-06. Many of them did very well and we are happy to help them this year too. We approached one of the reputed hospitals near Tambaram to do regular medical camps in the nearby villages. Awaiting further developments. Computer components were donated to an orphanage near Chennai. Physio therapy unit moved to its new location; New No. 38, Unnamalai Ammal Street, first floor, T.Nagar (from Parthasarathupuram Extension T.Nagar). Old clothing and wooden things were donated to GOONJ, an organisation which recycles these and donate to the rural people all over India. |
